Senator Mark Begich (D-AK)
(Wed - September 16, 2009)

Senator Begich is Greeted by DDF Sponsor Pat Sarcone of HP

Senator Begich was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2008. Prior to his election, Senator Begich served as mayor of Anchorage from 2003-2008. In addition, he was the youngest person ever elected to the Anchorage Assembly where he served for nearly ten years. Three times, his colleagues elected him chairman of the Assembly, Anchorage's second highest political office.

Senator Begich serves on the Senate Committees on Commerce, Science, and Transportation; Armed Services; and Veterans Affairs. On Commerce, the senator sits on the following subcommittees: Aviation Operations, Safety and Security; Communications, Technology and the Internet; Competitiveness, Innovation, and Export Promotion; Oceans, Atmospheres, Fisheries, and Coast Guard; and Surface Transportation.

Senator Begich is also a member of the recently formed Moderate Dems Working Group, a coalition of 15 Senate Democrats committed to finding consensus. In the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the group helped carve $100 billion out of the bill to garner support for passage. The moderate Democrats also helped trim $15 billion in non-defense spending from the Senate budget resolution. The group's goal is to support President Obama on his priorities of better health care, improved education, developing an energy plan and reducing the deficit.
